One Small Post for a Blog...

Welcome to GregShick.com! I am so excited to launch this site and share my data science journey with the world. I have been working on this project for quite some time and it will always be a work in progress. In my experience, getting started in analytics / data visualization / data science can be so overwhelming, because you feel like you need to know everything right away. I believe that the two most important aspects of any career are 1) continuous learning and 2) continuous sharing. I hope this site accomplishes both of those!

A Brief History

During 2018 and 2019, I had been sharing some of my data visualizations on LinkedIn but felt limited by the type of content I could share (Jupyter Notebooks, HTML output, JavaScript content etc.). After discovering the Hugo framework for building websites, I knew this was the best fit for my needs and set out learning or brushing up on the necessary skills (markdown, HTML, Git) to deploy a website. I will likely do a Getting Started with Hugo post somewhere down the road, but in the meantime, I highly recommend the Academic theme for those that are starting down their own path.

My coding journey could likely be traced all the way back to the 8th grade, learning how to program the formula for the Pythagorean Theorem into a TI-83 calculator, but I first discovered a love for code at my first job building functions and widgets in VBA. Since those days, I have tried to learn as much as I can about data science and analytic tools, focusing thus far on SQL, R, SAS, Tableau and Python.

The Road Ahead

I will be regularly sharing data visualizations, data science content and code. What makes this different than the myriad of other data focused blogs out there? For my personal projects, I focus on more 'fun' data sets (if there is such a thing) such as the Simpsons voice actors, sports statistics, graphical animations and much more! I will also be sharing some examples of dashboards/presentations that I have used in the past.

Thanks for checking my page, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy putting it together!
